Fellow Sportsman,
The
Buccaneer Big Buck Contest originated in 1984 by encouragement
from local hunters to have some kind of local contest. The original
format was 3 divisions, an area division, consisting of Washington County
and all neighboring counties that joined Washington County. The
2nd division was the Hill Country division. These counties of
the division like that of the South Texas division our 3rd division,
were counties that the Texas Park and Wildlife designated as Hill Country
and South Texas areas of the State. As the years went by, the
contest grew and we continued to rely on feed back from the hunters
that entered the contest to ensure a format of flexibility and integrity.
The contest today I believe
is one of the fairest to the hunter in relation of measurement in the
state. You enter the contest, and you only compete with hunters
in your area, which are now 6 divisions. Area Division (Washington
and joining counties), Hill Country Division, South Texas Division,
Over-All (All Counties not included in the other 3 divisions, High Fence
Division (any hunted area enclosed by a "High Fence" regardless
of acreage), and Mexico Division. Other categories for prizes
within each division include, Widest Spread, Most Points, Spike, and
Youth division. What is a trophy buck? Boone and Crocket has two
definitions, Typical and Non-Typical, but for most hunters to bag a
buck to be entered into these categories they either have to bag the
buck of a lifetime or have a fat wallet.
The Buccaneer Big Buck Contest's
concept is to let the average and serious hunter alike to enjoy the
contest. We claim a trophy is in the eyes of the beholder. Remember
that contest such as this or for fun and competition, that is why our
10 point tolerance rule has been recognized as a fair way to increase
fun and level the competition. These unique characteristics of
each buck, with a kicker or two, or maybe a drop tine is what makes
each buck different and maximizes the hunters score. After the
10 points are used we then deduct from the score. We hope you
enjoy Browsing through the photos and next year join us in the Buccaneer
Big Buck Contest.
